The Challenge

How can we create an online marketplace to connect both art lovers and the artists who create the artwork?

My client came to me with a vision of selling art through an online marketplace. I needed to figure out how best to keep the site aligned with her goals and vision for the site along with how to keep users involved in the process.

Emerging artists don't have much opportunity outside of Etsy and Instagram.

Oftentimes, emerging artists are left out of the picture. They don't have enough of a fan base for other companies to want to sell their work, so many of them turn to social media and platforms like Etsy to sell their work. Once they get "big" enough they can find ways to sell their products on multiple other platforms, but my client wanted to cut that waiting period for artists in half by promoting and supporting them through her own online marketplace.

Bridging the artist gap

My client gave me a lot of freedom with this site and we decided the vision for this project would be based on one main goal:

Emphasise the artists behind the artwork.

Finding the maket gap

I began looking at other sites that sold products created by artists like Society 8, sites that acted as the mediary between the art world and their users like Singulart, and sites that are marketed to the same sort of users she was expecting to have like Urban Outfitters.

Iterate, iterate, iterate!

The site was meant to be artist-focused, so I incorporated the artist of the month section on the homepage. Every month users can find out about a new artist. The product page also features information about the artist behind the product. After coming up with some features I thought would best suit the website, I began to create lo-fidelity wireframes.

There were 3 iterations before it felt like the chosen one.

Artist to consumer to artist

With the intention of bringing artists and consumers together, I focused on making the website as easy as possible for users to discover a new artist or a new product they might be interested in.

On the artist page, users can view products created by that artist as well as any shows or exhibitions they have coming up. I also advised my client to send email updates when a user's favourite artist has posted a new product or when they have an upcoming event to keep the site community-based.

The all-in-one solution to the all-in-one problem

I created a very personalised mobile app for tipped workers to track their income, swap their shifts with coworkers and have better control over their lives. The final result passed usability testing with flying colors and has given way for future product opportunities to grow.

An artists' haven

I integrated a featured artist section on the homepage. As a new website and also as an artist-centred website I thought it would be useful for users to get to know some of the artists through this rotating featured artist section.

Discover new artists

Keeping the artists at the forefront of the website, I decided to add the information of each artist below their products. Users are then able to discover more about the artist, and their other products.

Wishlist

As many users enjoy browsing shopping sites without the intention to buy in that moment, I decided to add a wishlist feature to the website so that users could save both the artists and products they are interested in to come back to them when they please.
